Try plugging your exhaust at the tips with shop towels while the car is idling. Quite a bit of pressure will build, allowing you to check around for leaks. This has worked well for me.

Subject: [s-cars] Stinkin' along

Folks,
my pearl Ms. Piggy has developed a stink. On cold acceleration it smells
like exhaust. On hot acceleration it smells like aromatic hydrocarbons.
In order to rule out my imagination aided by the exceptionally keen
sense of smell I asked Stefan to drive it the other day and he confirmed
my observations.

We are speculating that it must come from the exhaust tract somewhere
between the head and the central resonator, otherwise the stench
wouldn't have made it into the cabin through the open windows and/or
HVAC. Does anyone have any pointers that will help me narroow down the
search? Is there any way to test the exhaust sys similar to the one with
the "toilet clean out with a tyre nipple" gizmo for the intake?
