yeah but that cable ultimately connects to the latch at the lock
itself... it can come off at either end. Guess which end I'm praying
for...

I'm confused... The outside latch doesn't have a cable, only the inside
latch does... Or am I missing something (memory fart).

Gentz,

Actually I had the cable on my wife's S4 pop off THREE times.

Finally disassembled the door, removed the latch and discovered it was
gunked up enough to cause the latch to return slowly which allowed the
cable to pop off.

Disassembled the latch, soaked in automatic transmission fluid, scrubbed
latch thoroughly with same fluid and used brake cleaner to clean it.
Sprayed inside of latch with silicone based lubricant and reassembled. 8
months later and the cable hasn't popped off since!
