i took the lazy way out, and used the R-134a can. $13 at walmart.
i emptied the whole can into my '94 miata, and the AC works fine now
(not great, but it was never great to begin with). there's a danger of
overfilling the system, but in the miata's case, i noticed a gradual
degradation in performance so i was comfortable that it was not a faulty
switch. i added R134a with the AC running, and as i added the R134a,
the air got colder. the amount in the can was about the same as the
factory-specified fill, and the can was nearly empty by the time the
AC got cold.

the right way would be to use pressure gauges to check for correct
pressure. some R134 cans have a built-in gauge, but they only tell
you the pressure on the low side, which may not be accurate. i took
my chances.
