Sounds like a slick project!  I'm assuming there is no way to display song
information on the head unit, it would just display track count as if it was
playing a CD, right?

(You could directly drive the IC display (like the TDS-1 digital boost
display) to provide a custom display with song information, but there aren't
very many characters per line!  Maybe with horizontal scrolling you could
display song names....)

Sounds like the main disadvantage is you will be limited to 10 defined
playlists, but this is true of most iPod-to-head unit integration adaptors.
One big advantage is that you don't have to find a place to install a
control knob or external display, and there is nothing to give away that you
may have an iPod hiding in the glove box.
