Wayne: Sorry that you became a "Don't try this at home, kids" data
point, aka "YMMV".
I ran one of the first group buys on these HIR bulbs through Daniel
Stern a few years ago (before the cheap McCullough HIDs were available).
The whole idea at the time was that instead of running the 9005 high
beams in the low (9006) DOT headlight position, the 9012 HIR low beam
bulb would supply as much or more light as the 9005 would have, at the
same 55 W (or less) draw as the normal 9006 low beam halogen bulbs. Too
bad that you found out the 9005 analogy with the 9011s doesn't work.
Hopefully, you can find used DOT housings without too much pain. I
presume that you are running Euro lenses so if you score somebodies
S-car or late C4 A6 DOT housings with a busted lense, you can easily
swap the lenses and get back to where you were.
At this point, I would recommend ditching the whole HIR thing and
moving to the McCullough HIDs (about US$200 a pair).
