Mike, maybe I'm lucky but my '95 S6 has never had a recharge and it is still
going strong here just south of you by Yelm, but maybe the R-134A systems do
better over time than R-12? Probably just that luck is on my side for a time. I
know it takes someone familiar with the system to do a proper recharge as their
isn't the standard low pressure recharge port unless a '92 is different.
As for your vents, you may need to take it to the dealer unless you have the
shop manual and/or something like Vagcom which can detect many HVAC problems.
Hopefully you will get some feedback for some earlier S4 guys as to the
recharge. I would have them evacuate it completely and then add the oil and
coolant. You may even consider installing a new receiver/drier if the system has
been recharged a few times and/or if it has been open at all. MGH
