[s-cars] Anyone got an opinion on this code reader

Hi, Sam.

Since you asked, I do have an opinion, but not much solid information
about the
scanner in question.

First, I recommend you check the web sites at <www.ross-tech.com>
for VAG-COM
products and <www.shadetreesoftware.com> for their code readers.

The reader on NZ ebay needs an interface for the 2 X 2 connectors on
the '95 and
earlier cars that do not have the OBD II plug. The other readers
will require the same
interface that sells for $50. Updates and compatibility with new
vehicles if you decide
to move up are a concern as well.

The scanner is limited to trouble code reading and erasing, where the
software for the
laptop or handheld are full function software for resetting service
intervals and other
adaptation and graphing functions for real time analysis. Perhaps
you see no need
for the expanded capability, but you will if you have it available.
I just think this is a
big price for such a limited tool. I assume the price is New Zealand
dollars ? Still, the
VAG-COM and Shade Tree software interprets the codes without
referring to a manual
and allows you to print a record as well. Most everyone has a
handheld or laptop
computer available to use. Even a desktop can be used for VAG-COM,
but it's not
ideal since you can't take it along.

Disclaimer: No affiliation, just opinions.
