Iain: AFAIK, once the car is running, the cam position sensor can fail
and the ECU will continue to use the engine speed sensor to run off.
However, if you stop the car and the cam position sensor has truly
failed, then it will not restart. The CEL would have come on and the
blink code would be 2113.
The opposite is not true if the engine speed sensor fails and the cam
position sensor is good. (I think you are just "done").

i thought that if one sensor failed whilst the car was running (speed
and ignition) then the other took over, only causing a non start when
you try and restart the car.
