Over the mirror is still the best place for maximum all around visibility.
A mounting method that's worked great for me is to remove the mini center
fold down visor. Remove the suction cups from the V1 windshield mounting
bracket and using a small spacer/washer, screw this bracket into the hole
where the visor used to be. Slide V1 in and snug against the windshield and
S/R panel. (this has the added benefit of holding up the sunroof panel when
the clips break;)
Wiring can then be run down drivers side to an open switched power point.
I also recommend that you get the V1 remote as then the main unit stays dark
and the mute button can be close at hand. Years ago I "temporarily" mounted
my remote below the boost gauge in the removed ashtray space and have yet to
relocate it.
