Yup, that's thr right place to start.

I was trying to reset these interval counters last week, and to start 
with I could find the instrument controller just fine.

Then, in fool-around-mode, I tried to login to the advanced function
section.  I didn't reat the warning on the screen that a failed login
would render the controller unresponsive until the car had been
shut off for several minutes.  Bahhh!  Sure enough, the controller
then refused to respond, and after turning the ignition off for several
minutes, the VAG-COM still can't find the instrument controller.

I guess the next step is to pull the ground strap off the battery
for a few minutes and then see what happens.  

Has anybody been through this before?  Is ground strap removal the
right action?
