Are you sure it is that, just to share I had the same issue and it was the connector from the sending unit.  Turned out the line was starting sever because it was too taught (sp?). Eventually the line severed, butt clipped and heat shrinked wrapped and all was well.

My oil temp gauge is a tad flakey.  I know the cause but don't know the long
term fix.  I had pulled the cluster and removed the gauge a while back.
Cleaning the posts on the gauge helped for a bit but the flakiness returned
in about 1 month.  I'm thinking a small drop of solder on each post but feel
that this may also be a temporary, albeit more temporary fix than just
cleaning the posts.  Oh yeah, I did hit them with DeOxit before reassembly
last time.  I'd continue to live with it but my outside temp display bulb is
out so I'll be removing the IC to address that and would like to kill two
birds.
