Wilkommen!
OBD1 and 2 are not compatible, they are almost like two different
operating systems (In PC talk) if you will. And no, you can't upgrade
from 1 to 2. You need some VAG-kom tools like Ross Tech or Audi/VW tools
to communicate with the ECUs.
Be happy you have the OBD2 style port in your 97 S6. Hooking up to the
old style ones under the hood requires a 50$ adapter or wiring in your
own OBD2 plug.
These car's do rock, suspension upgrades help out with that ;-)

Subject: [s-cars] 97 urS6 question
Hey guys,
I have a 97 urS6, imported from Canada. It has taken me a year to find
out,
on the audifans website, that my car has an OBD-2 connector, but is only
OBD-1 compliant. So, I haven't been able to connect to emission station
computers. Does anyone know how I can get equipped with OBD-2, or if its
even possible...
Many Thanks,
Henry
P.S. I am a new member, and really pumped to be part of this group. Our
cars
rock!
