Iain,
I have been using 225/45/17 on my 92. 245's are too fat for best traction
in the winter. In general, snow tires need to be skinny to avoid floating
on the heavy wet stuff. If you plan on keeping the car a few years, a new
set of wheels is a good choice. The cost of cheap wheels is only $100-150
each and just a few seasons will probably be the break even point. It is
much less of a hassle whn you want to switch because you can do it on your
own time in the driveway. I bought a set of A4 replica wheels and have been
very happy with the look and price.
I use nokian Hakka 2's with studs. Probably a bit overkill, but I do a lot
of skiing in the northeast and drive through a lot of ice storms on my way
to and from the coast.

Good Luck!

Subject: [s-cars] Winter tyres and wheels
Folks thinking about getting a set of winter rubber, never having done this
before i have some really dumb basic questions.
1. Do i get the same size as my summer tyres?? If not then what size is
best??
2. Should i just get a cheap set of used of wheels and put them on that??
my car is an urs6 currently running 17" wheels with 245 tyres
Thanks
Iain
