[s-cars] Winter tyres and wheels

One point that was not raised in the thread is road condition. If roads get
really bad when freezing, like in Quebec, with large potholes hidden by the
snow, definitely 15" steel wheels, with spacers if needed. At 100$ a used
set, the break even point comes with the first two tires, profit with the
remaining two.

If handling on snow/ice/slush is the major concern, Blizzak WS-50 195/65/15
is the best tire I've ever tried. Now, this tire really sucks on dry and
doesn't last as long as Nokians (still two loooong winters at "decent"
speed). Everything has a price. Nokian RSi are not bad either, much better
on dry, will probably last 3 winters, but not as good (read fun) on snow.

If handling on dry road is a concern, Pirelli Wintersport 205/60/15 is a
really decent tire on dry (much better than Blizzak WS-50 and somewhat
better than Nokians WR) while being able to resist major potholes and fly
trough fresh and packed snow, not that good cornering in wet heavy snow but
still decent acceleration and braking. Mine lasted only one season because
of bad alignment but they're said to have durability between Blizzak and
Nokians.

Folks thinking about getting a set of winter rubber, never having done this
before i have some really dumb basic questions.

1. Do i get the same size as my summer tyres?? If not then what size is
best??

2. Should i just get a cheap set of used of wheels and put them on that??

my car is an urs6 currently running 17" wheels with 245 tyres

Thanks

Iain
