Scenario: You are out in the boonies and a coil dies. You determine
this
by pulling the injector connectors until you find the dead coil (no
difference in idle smoothness when you disconnect the injector on the
dead coil cylinder).
You have two choices: Leave the fuel injector disconnected on the dead
cylinder or connect it back up and drive to the nearest point where a
real
repair can be made.
I say it is better to leave the injector disconnected because then you
won't be running raw fuel into the exhaust and the cats. Based on
recent
anecdotal stories of melted cat pelts coming out the back, this seems
way
smarter than the option of reconnecting the injector.
There are some who say reconnect the injector because it will help to
lubricate that cylinder. I would say "wash down the oil off that
cylinder"
plus kill the cat(s).
Disconnecting the fuel injector can't be that much different than what
Chrysler (and others) are doing on their V8 cars to provide variable
displacement (4-6-8) as needed.
