Manny: If you were only replacing the fuel pump, then you do not need
to remove the basket to R&R the fuel pump. It is held in by two clips
that are shown in my DIY instructions:

If you really want to remove the basket, I would remove the pump from
the basket first (and get everything else out of the fuel tank - which
by the way, you want to be almost empty - at least below the Reserve
Warning light level). Then you can remove the basket with the tool (if
the tool doesn't break) or two big honking screw drivers wedged into the
basket. (Remember you will only have one arm doing this and you will be
working "blind").
As for removing panels, based on my investigation of my "new" 98 C4
Avant, you don't have to remove anything other than the carpet between
the seat back and the spare tire/third seat well. I suggest laying the
rear seats down (forward) and then opening up the third seat access
panels - but only to release the lower edge of the carpet (which you
would then lift up and push forward onto the back of the rear seats
(that are laying down having a nap).
After that, the procedure should be the same as with the sedan.
As I side note, I just realized that relaying the fuel pump to the
battery must be a bit more challenging with an Avant than a sedan with
respect to routing wires.
