Thanks for all the responses, especially those beyond "shoulda backed it
up" - gee, duh, thanks.

IBM Thinkpad T40 Centrino Windows XP 60gb. It was spinning one day, I
heard it start chewing on itself, then it stopped and blue screened. I
rebooted and it Failed to Find Operating System.

IT guy Norm here (SFest burgundy 951) took my HD and USB'd it to his T40
and his laptop "saw" the USB device as plugged in but nothing would
read. Mine was spinning but not starting, no smellybad clutchbake or
anything. Mine would spin, Norm tried tapping it briskly a few times,
no result. I think it has since stopped spinning.

What does this mean in the context of your questions below, I dunno?

Thanks again, keep the insight coming to me offlist, remember to please
ping me with your email (and even cell's). I had some of it in my Palm
but that wasn't connected in 1.5 years since Windows XP came here and
wouldn't load my Palm again. Quite the library of S-Dom gathered here
over the years, ashes to ashes as of today...

How do you mean it crashed? Is it not spinning up or making noise or
does it smell like burnt electronics or something or is your PC just not

booting? Either way I'd put the drive into a working computer (using a
new cable) as a second drive and see if you can get it to work. Usually

they'll come and go before they finally don't work at all. If you
replace the drive with another one with windows (or whatever OS you use)

or at least get it into another computer that's already running, and it
pops up, even for a few minutes, you might be able to salvage some data
off of it. Doing this also rules out the power plug and the cable as
possible causes for the failure.
