The 959 was to be the group B from porsche. Problem too heavy to compete
with audi/renault/ford. They chose P-D for their theatre of war.... All were
really 959's, the first two years of 3 competing they were development mules
at P-D
1984 - 911 Carrera 4x4, 959 without the variable torque PDK and 959
bodywork. Took 1st and 2nd
1985 - 959 but without twin turbos used 3.2 Carrera motor at 230hp. DNF 3
cars
1986 - 959 full battle regalia at 400hp (gas quality detuned). 1st, 2nd and
5th. IIRC, the service car would have placed 3rd.
Reference: World of Rally series....

Paris-Dakar was done by the 911, exactly which variant I'm not sure.
It was also done by the precursor to the 959 (the car you're talking about-
more 911-like bodywork, turbo and AWD) and the 959 itself.
961 is the roadgoing version of the 959 designed for Le Mans competition.
You're not going to make me pull out the huge 3-volume bible, are you? :-)
