Well sorta.
The M1 of course was origianally intended to run in IMSA, but a rules
change shortyly after the cars launch saw it banned. So to save some
grace BMW got thier own one-car class together. Of course it failed,
but not nearly as bad as the M1 would have if they didn't try.
Basically the same thing happened with the 961. Just as the other
message about it states the 961 was entered in "AWD only" sorts of
classes and nobody else had anything to run with it. IIRC a few were
entered in prototype classes for exposure, but they were obviously far
outclassed by cars such as the 956/962.
