Unfortunately I can't easily go this route, because I do not have the code
for the radio. The dealer said they could find them for me, in a pinch, but
I'd prefer to delay crossing that bridge.
Any idea how long the transmission will take to learn new habits, just from
driving it? I've taken to using the tiptronic-mode quite a bit. I wonder
if that delays the learning process for full automatic.

You should be able to call the A8/S8 Advocate Line to get your radio code, it's an 800# - I unfortunately lost it during my hard drive crash but maybe you can find it. Or call Audi of America and have them get it for you.
On the learning, here's what I did.
Bought it, drove in tip exclusively. Then realized I needed to learn what the car "wanted" to do before I should be there trying to do it. Then I drove for maybe a few weeks in auto exclusively. Let the tranny "learn" ("learn THIS!" bahahahaaa man you had to be there when Jimmaaaay came out with that one), but more importantly, ME learn what IT wants to do. Then I switched back to exclusively tip. I've got it down to a science now and learned all the nuance (and there is much!).
This worked well for me, I can work the system very effectively now and only have a quip or two here or there - no biggies really.
HTH, or something and stuff and things. I think.
