93's could be either R12 or R134.   Easiest way to tell is the condensor.  The R12 condensor core, when viewed from the front with the hood open, is sort of shaped like a "hill."  The core is low on both ends, and high in the middle.
 
The R134 core is squared off on all side.

Fairly sure the 93 is R12.  Also, if it were too low on refrigerant, the
compressor would shut down via the low pressure switch.

The A/C compressor on my '93 makes a slight knocking noise most of the
time, and I can tell the charge is low, because the air coming out isn't
very cold.  I try to keep it turned off most of the time to prevent
further damage, assuming it's already not 100%.

I didn't see a sticker under the hood, but I assume these are 134a cars.
I thought I might try to put in an oil charge and maybe a can of
refrigerant and see if that helps before I take it to the stealer, but I
wanted to poll you guys first.  I see a new compressor isn't cheap...
