[s-cars] A/C compressor and charge issue

Search the archives... there's been a lot of postings on this. In summation... no, you can't charge too well with a kit, although I'm sure some have done it. You only have access to a high pressure port.

Yes... you can access a low pressure port near the firewall on the passenger side underneath the low pressure sending unit... but I have yet to hear of anyone charging through it, as it would require an adapter to hook up... one that I've never seen.

With the S cars, I have been able to evacuate and successfully recharge. But to do so requires at least a vacuum pump, and a means to measure the charge (lbs/oz's) accurately. It also requires you to heat the 134 cylinder slightly to force in the charge. If you simply try to add refrigerant to the UrS, you have NO way of knowing when to stop. There is neither a sight glass, nor a way to measure both high and low pressures while servicing it.

What ever you do, DO NOT attempt to charge your system through the high side port with the car running or even hot. If you do, we may end up reading about you in the obituaries... Please be careful... and if you're not sure what you're doing, get help from someone who does.

Thanks, folks.

Looks like mine's 134a. Has anyone tried to recharge using a kit? I might try
that if it will get me down the road a bit before the compressor bites it.

93's could be either R12 or R134. Easiest way to tell is the condensor. The
R12 condensor core, when viewed from the front with the hood open, is sort of
shaped like a "hill." The core is low on both ends, and high in the middle.

The R134 core is squared off on all side.

  Dave

Fairly sure the 93 is R12. Also, if it were too low on refrigerant, the
compressor would shut down via the low pressure switch.

The A/C compressor on my '93 makes a slight knocking noise most of the
time, and I can tell the charge is low, because the air coming out isn't
very cold. I try to keep it turned off most of the time to prevent
further damage, assuming it's already not 100%.

I didn't see a sticker under the hood, but I assume these are 134a cars.
I thought I might try to put in an oil charge and maybe a can of
refrigerant and see if that helps before I take it to the stealer, but I
wanted to poll you guys first. I see a new compressor isn't cheap...

Thanks,
Mark
