figured out the cause of the coolant geyser.
my first real problem with the turbo installation, and it isn't the fault
of the turbo. the coolant return hose has a gash in it. the hose is
resting against the motor mount, which cut through through it.
i know i had about a finger-width of clearance when i installed the
turbo, because i was worried about that particular issue and checked it.
i think the passenger side motor mount may have failed since then,
allowing the engine to move down more. when i look under the car,
the lowest point visible is the catalytic converter. at least i think
it's the cat - it runs right to left under the car. i'm pretty sure
it's not supposed to be so low.
so i've got to swap the motor mounts and fix the hose. the hose came
from 034 motorsport, and it's a braided steel line with a hardline that
attaches to the turbo. the other end is crimped to a rubber hose, which
crosses over to a nipple on the engine block. the cut is pretty close
to the crimp. looks like i'll have to cut the crimp off, attach a new
rubber hose, and clamp it. i'll probably just use a gear clamp, and
hope that doesn't create any clearance issues.
