[s-cars] S4 or A4, what would you do?

Dave,
I haven't had my 01 S4 on a dyno but judgeing by others dyno numbers with similar mods the car should be putting 400-450whp down. I went with a Vast performance fueling setup which is what people call a homebrew because you can use limmiwinks program to adjust fuel and timing etc. I went with K04's the first time but had coolant in the oil and it killed them so after getting the coolant in oil problem fixed I went with a hybrid K04's that use the RS6 compressor wheel and I had the hot side clearanced and WG's port and polished to get more air through them. I am using stock manifolds for now. I have straight pipes from the turbo's to a center 3" muffler and into a 3" rear muffler. I will be replacing these with better flowing mufflers in the future. I used the RS4 intercoolers, this is the weak point on this car since there is only so much room for SMIC's and FMIC's are very tight and might be a problem under track conditions by blocking air to the radiator. I used a mocal sa
ndwich plate and a 13 row mocal oil cooler. This weekend it was in the mid 70's a Gratton and the highest I saw my oil temps get was just under 250 degree's so I was very happy with that since my URS used to go over 300. For a clutch and flywheel I used an aluminum flywheel and a carbon kevlar clutch from Vast Performance. I also put RS4 motor and tranny mounts and an AWE drive train stabilizer that mounts to the trans to keep things from getting too sloppy. I used stassis tracksport coilovers with 600 front and 700 rear springs, I think I need to send the shocks in for better dampening after feeling it on the track but for street its perfect. I used the UUC short shifter, it helped alot with the slop. The AWE bi pipe is another good thing to eliminate the TBB that gets tears in it. Hmm, what else, oh yea, Stoptechs in the front and plan to just use one of the many rear bigger rotor and bracket upgrades because although the stock brakes are better than the old S cars they s
till aren't enough if you want to track the car. I love the power this car makes from 2500 to 6500rpm, its very linear all the way through and with very little push to the throttle there is much power to be had. I also average 24mpg on 50/50 city highway driving. For a dedicated track car I would use the 1.8 or 2.0 if you are going to strip it and cage it but for a couple track days a year and a lot of fun on the street the B5 S4 is hard to beat. Its a nightmare to work on but it can be done in your garage. I think you should find a well sorted stage 3 s4 to drive then a 3+ or whatever 1.8 or 2.0 before you make a decision. As for $$ I have around $10K in upgrades to get it too this point and it still needs a rework of the suspension and a much bigger RSB.

Subject: [s-cars] S4 or A4, what would you do?

So this chat has been going back and forth (starting with "Worthy Projects"),
hitting somewhat on this topic....

What would you choose, and why? I currently have a nice little '98 1.8t A4...
and just picked up a set of mint RS4 brakes (no more braking power problems).
It is a fun and great handling little car, but the power is a problem.

However, I'm still sitting on the fence. Should I take the A4 and do a nice 2.0
project, or would it be a better bet to move to the S4 as a project?

I like the idea of the 1.8 simply because it is a lot like working on the I-5.
Everything can be done without removing the engine. But I also like the idea of
2.7 liters of displacement... and the bottom end torque that goes with it.

Those with S4 experience... what mods and dollars would be involved to build a
420-450whp 2.7? If anyone on this list has a car so equipped, what is it like
to own, maintain, and drive?

I'm at the point where I'd like to choose one or the other. I'd be looking at a
2000 or 2001 S4, or the 98 A4.

Dave
