Subject: [s-cars] Alternator Removal
To: _s-car-list at audifans.com_ (mailto:s-car-list at audifans.com)
Last Friday my car started dying about 5 miles from my apartment and by the
time I made it home it was barely running, I rolled into the driveway. I
knew it must be the alternator since the battery is good and I went through
the same problem when the brushes on my alternator wore out. This time
however it's not a cheap, easy brush fix, I had the alternator tested and it
is only outputting 11.4V at load.
I have a Bentley CD manual but can't seem to find an alternator removal
procedure (I just got it a few weeks ago and don't know my way around it too
well yet), I thought I remembered someone going through the process a few
months back on the list but the search turned up nothing. Does anyone have
a write up for changing the alternator? I figure spending 10 minutes
reading a BTDT will save me a couple hours when it comes to doing the job
this weekend.
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,
When I did mine it took about 20 minutes to remove. I do not remember
exactly what steps I took but its not hard to do. First step though is to
disconnect the battery. Next step is to remove the tension on the alternator belt.
After that a few wrenches and sockets com in handy. I seem to recall that I
used a few extensions also. Good luck.
