[s-cars] Curioser and curioser

When replacing my switch I had the same problem only to realize I had already thrown out that small metal pin (about 3/8" long) which goes inside the screwdriver slot at one end of the switch for the end of the key to push in when inserted (hence ACC power and dome light turn-on). I saw the pin on the floor and probably put in the trash not knowing what it was. Dohhhh!

I ended up cutting a piece of coat hanger wire (similar diam. to pin) and inserting it into the switch after it was installed while the connector is off. IIRC it is a BITCH to do because the pin naturally falls out when maneuvering the swith up into place from under the dashboard (I remember a tight fit). Maybe a dab of contact grease would hold it in place. So far my solution has held up just fine. If you do have to cut a custom metal rod to do this I suggest testing the correct length with a voltmeter while the switch is out of the car before installing. A small telescoping mirror tool and a flashlight helps a lot here.

Bob,

I just discovered that I hadn't discarded the old switch as I thought I
had. Looking at the key end of the switch I see a small metal part inside
the "screwdriver slot" which I don't recall from other switches I've
seen. I guess I need to do some checking. Dunno if I'll get to it before
leaving for DC tomorrow AM. It will be a week before I get back
home. Pressing this part further into the body of the switch shows that
the metal part in there is spring loaded with a fairly stiff loading. I'll
investigate further when I get a chance later - possibly today.

The part number printed in the switch is 4A0 905 849 B. This was the
switch which left the radio turned on until removing the key.

Bob
