The cliche "no good deed will go unpunished" springs to mind.

So, I am cutting the grass last night on my new-to-me Cub Cadet and
enjoying myself. My son (6 years old) was out in the yard playing.
As I took a pass up the yard I noticed a rabbit nest in the grass. I
shut the mower off and called my son over to see them. They were about
5" long, 3 of them all cozied up in a small depression.
My son was immediately worried about my hitting them with the mower. So
I fetched a small orange traffic cone out of the shed and placed beside
the nest. I told my son that I will cut way out around them and they
should be fine. He placed the cone directly over them for extra
protection and stood guard.
I started the tractor and finished the pass. Then I turned around and
headed back toward the cone, my son and the rabbit's nest. As I
approach, I swung way out to my right and around. About 6 or 7 feet
past the nest I hit the brakes and shout to my son "see, I missed them".
Just then, the cone topples over and 3 tiny bunnies shoot out of the
hole. One jumped into the fallen cone, the other one shot across the
yard and under the fence 4 feet away and...you guessed it, that last son
of bitching rabbit ran 6 or 7 feet and went right under the running
mower deck. WTF!!!
I quickly looked around to see if he miraculously made it under the
tractor some how but all I saw was a piece of bunny scalp with a little
ear. F-me. My son freaked out and started crying. That cut the
evening short as I took him in and tried to comfort him.
Damn, somebody get me a beer...
