Randy: I feel your loss. An S6 Avant yet. Double bad. Rear ending
these cars kills them deader than dead at this point in their remaining
economic value. However, as you noted, the car's occupants always seem
to survive with little or not issues. The first car to go this way that
I remember was Jimmy Pribble's Cyclamen on Travertine S4, a very rare
combination. There have been several since.
The good news is if you have the time and incination, you can buy the
car back from the insurance company and part it out for about double
what it was worth. For instance, your engine, your front fenders, hood,
wheels, tranny, etc. all have value. Not that that makes up for the
loss of a trusted (and quick) vehicle. A6 4.2L wagon or 6 spd allroad
have been known to take the sting away.
