Actually, I've learned a lot. First, pay attention to the question 
I'm asking. Second, be very specific with what I'm asking for.

Also, there's been a good overview of the size and offset of the 
various wheels available for C4. Good fodder for the archives, very 
useful compilation.

So, what did I learn?

I need to run 17" wheels. I should run narrow snow tires on those 
wheels. A couple of listers offered to give or sell me tires that 
probably aren't exactly what I need. I'll probably end up with a set 
of 225/45 17" tires as I'm more likely to find those used. I'm not 
looking to spend $600 or more on snow tires for this car.

Thank you all for the conversation, and thank you, Taka, in 
particular, for your deep knowledge of all things Audi.

And thank you Steve for the offer of the wheels/tires, but I don't 
think they will fit :(
