Couple things to keep in mind... if the MIL lamp doesn't prove out at start
up, Floyd's car may have a burnt out bulb, or be one of those car where the
bulb is missing altogether.
Regarding temp senders, I believe the sender in the heater core T fitting is
to tell the Climate Control what the coolant temp is, and it is the reading
that can be viewed by the CC head diagnostics.
However, the temp sensor that the ECU uses for determining fuel mixture is
the white sensor screwed into the rear of the head or block (I forget which
exactly). Then there is the multifunction temp sender in the water manifold
which drives the temp gauge in the instrument cluster.

The computer hasn't said anything strange, no lights are on. I still
need to get a VAG-COM to check for codes. The smoke is gray.
