I don't know about the exhaust gas theory (sounds fishy to me), but I
can tell you that I ended up with a ton of black gunk from my cooling
system due to a failing rubber hose.
To make a long story short, a piece of fuel hose was used to replace
the short turbo coolant line under the intake manifold. Over the
course of a year this hose disintegrated from the inside out, until
eventually rupturing while heading down the front straight at Lime
Rock Park. The inside of the coolant reservoir was covered in baked
on black gunk. I ended up replacing it, the radiator, and the heater
core. (The heater core was semi-plugged and resulted in poor heat in
the winter; the radiator was replaced just in case.)
