the temperature display on my '92 S4 is showing only the upper half of the digits. sometimes the lower half shows, when the number is a 1 or 7. i think this may be due to dirty or corroded contacts. any idea which connector i should check?

The S4 IC does differ in a few details from the S6 IC, but for our
purposes you can follow the same directions.
Start by disconnecting the battery (this is always prudent), have your
cell phone and radio codes on hand for when you hook the battery back up.
To R&R the I/C you will need a philips head screwdriver and to swap all
of the bulbs you will need a torx driver to open a cover panel behind
the speedo / tach, and either a small slotted screwdriver or a 7 mm
socket to remove the bulbs.
Telescope the steering wheel all the way out and tilt it all the way
down. Remove the two philips head screws holding on the black lateral
trim piece that spans the bottom face of the IC. Tilt the left side
forward until it clears the dash face, pull it to the left (have the
drivers door open) you will notice that the right side is held in by a
2" pin.
At this point you have exposed the lower front portion of the IC and the
three smaller philips screws that hold it in. Remove these. At this
point you can gently pull the IC forward (it may take a few tries, be
gentle. It is a Chinese puzzle of sorts) to expose the rear.
There are two large and several other ancillary wiring harnesses and
associated connectors. Remove these, use a small screwdriver to pry
with, if needed. Most of the connectors are color coordinated.
With the IC out and face down you will be able to see most of the orange
base bulbs. You will need to tilt the panel behind the speedo / tach
open to gain access to the balance of the bulbs.
I have done a '93 which required 10 bulbs and a '94 & '95 that required
9 bulbs. Your results may vary so have 10 bulbs on hand just in case.
Rotate the bulbs a quarter turn counter clockwise to remove them. The
new bulbs install with a quarter turn clockwise.
The re-installation is the reverse procedure.
I have been running the 2.0 watt bulbs for abut a year without any
problems. They are an improvement. I have the rheostat at about 90%
intensity.
Changing these bulbs will not affect the intensity of any of the other
dash / switch lights.
