3 spoke to S4/100 is a bit of work. There's a really good writeup 
floating around on what it takes...

3 spoke to A6 is plug & play. On my son's '97 A6, it was just a 
matter of pulling the 4 spoke and installing the 3 spoke.

When the change occurred, I don't know...
