If you use your credit card I would check with them on what fees they charge.  Some charge as much as 3% fee for international transactions, others do not charge anything.  I think your best approach would be to use a bank wire transfer.  Or go to a large bank that can cut you a check in GBP.  Bank fees are only around $25-$30 for a wire transfer, probably about the same for checks in foreign currency.  This would be much cheaper than 3% of $3k.
