[s-cars] replacing struts/shocks

I have a '92 with the stock springs. I installed a set of the Bilstein HDs
about 2 years ago. The ride height did increase by about 0.5"....I think it
has settled down a little but definitely higher than the stock Boge with
140k miles on them. The ride is great....it definitely stiffened it up a
little bit and lessened the body roll.

I have often thought I should have gone with the sports in order to keep the
ride height lower but I am still not sure if they will actually fit. I
think it may be pushing it on their travel. Even though the car sits 0.5"
higher it still handles better than with the stock Boge (no big surprise
there).

If you use the Bilsteins, the collar that is used to hold the strut down is
not nearly as easy to get on and off as the stock one, since it has a slot
that you have to use a tool from the side to get to rather than the nice hex
nut on top like the stock one. I was able to do it with the spring/strut
assembly still in the car but I did have to jack the car up and remove the
wheel to get to the adjusting collar.

Koni's are another way to go, albeit more expensive.

Subject: [s-cars] replacing struts/shocks

Subject is a 92 S4,
Will be doing suspension overhaul, level depends on what becomes of Eric's
vibration investigation, as my car has the same. As far as strut choices go,
I want to maintain my 92 springs because I think they offer a sporty yet
compliant ride without being too tall but not slammed either. Is anyone
running Bilstein sports with these springs? Are they too short for the 92
springs? I know HDs are the suggested strut if using Bilsteins, but I don't
want to raise the car with them, and I've heard that might happen. Is there
any reason to use something more along the lines of OE, say Boge?

I don't plan on tracking the car aside from maybe in April @ VIR. Hopefully
the coupe will be track ready by then, but if not, it should be by the fall
events....
