Are you running a stock EM? If so, I would suggest that you're observing the effects of heat transfer from the EM. If you run the car very hard with the stock EM (at night) and look at it immediately after the hard run, you will notice that the brightest glow on the EM will occur right at cylinder number 4.

On an RS2 EM, the glow is very even from end to end.

Maybe the source??

Subject: [s-cars] 1.8t coil temperatures

Took temperature readings* of my 1.8t coils after a spirited 20 minute drive
home tonight. ambient temperature 61F.

Cyl#1 - VW dealer - 191F

Cyl#2 - 034 Motorsport - 189F

Cyl#3 - STI - 190F

Cyl#4 - VW dealer - 201F

Cyl#5 - STI - 193F

Humm. cylinder #4 is about 10 degrees hotter! This is a VW-dealer sourced
115R coil. I wonder if there is something about cylinder #4?

Will rearrange coils and test again!

*Temperatures readings taken with Craftsman IR thermometer. Not a precision
instrument, but good enough to identify a clear temperature differential of
several degrees.
