[s-cars] NAC: Why should I run away from a '96 328IS?

My family of six drivers at one time had six Fiats. Mine was a '72 124
Sport Coupe. Eventually, it was very seriously modified, engine and
suspension wise, and was bulletproof reliable. In 11 years, it had one
failure...the fuel pump died on an L.A. freeway. If you drove them
relatively hard, but smooth, and changed the oil every 3k miles, kept the
bushings lubed, they lasted forever. American BS about not doing a d*mn
thing about the car contributed to their rep. Of course, they don't have to
salt roads in L.A. either. When I sold it, with 177k on it, the compression
was still within spec. I ran Castrol GTX or Valvoline Racing back in those
days. I remember taking it up skiing early one season after I had multiple
cars and hadn't changed out the 50W racing oil that I had decided to try
while at my summer job in Brawley, CA, near the Mexican border. Nice summer
with temps often above 100F...at midnight.) Anyway, the morning we were
going to head back, the car fired up...and was firing, it seemed, less than
one cylinder per second, but it kept going until the oil thinned and we took
off home.

Only other failure in the family was my brothers bottom feeder 128 2 door;
NOT the coupe or 3p. He had it modded, too, and it would jump off its'
front drive wheels when you nailed it, which he did regular shocking P cars.
It was fast as stink, but he broke a couple of half shafts. Funnier than
all hell waxing 911's with those 145mm wide 13" tires.

I did manage to avoid the big guys in white lab coats until now.

In fact, the Fiats are considered the most reliable Italian cars... and
that's true. She promises me a lot of electrical gremlins and delivered
exactly what she promised.

Wait...you bought an Italian car and one of your top criteria was
reliability? How has that worked out for you :)

With the S-bitch relationship becoming a I hate her, she hates me, S-he's a
bitch affair, I'm planning on putting the S-bitch aside until the weather
becomes warmer or I manage to free the garage from the Fiat. So, I started
to plan for a third car. The criteria was:
- Must absolutely be reliable
- Must be below 10K$
- Can very optionally be fun
Of course, I came up with the two most logical choices:
- '00 Golf 1.8T (57Kmiles)
- '96 BMW 328IS (70Kmiles)
And, as we are in winter and the snow finally start to fall, I evidently
picked the RWD 328IS as my preferred choice (Don't question my logic, I'm
already questioning it myself every hour since I bought the '81 Fiat Spider
based on the exact same criteria!)

So, the NAC question is: How much trouble I'm running in buying a '96
328IS... beside the fact the PO has probably been a precursor of the JNR
philosophy of driving.
