My son and I have spent the better part of the past 3 weeks
looking at a whole lot of C4 A6 wagons.

It came down to two. If you are interested in a *very* clean C4
wagon, silver on black, contact me offlist and I'll give you the
particulars. We did not buy this wagon as it had 20K more miles
and a year on the car we did choose. It was also geographically
challenged (near Danbury, CT), and I couldn't have my mechanic go
through it. A very nice car, well worth $4K.

Most were junk, poorly maintained by their owner and/or
incompetent mechanic.

- CEL unable to turn off (doh)
- missing engine shroud, shattered, duct-taped, valve cover
shroud, tb shroud. Wow.
- broken ignition switch
- dying battery (at a used car dealer, no less)

We found a '97 blue over black wagon with 135K miles that we
expect to purchase tomorrow. My mechanic went through it today and
found a number of minor things (most of which are all probably
wrong with all of the cars we *didn't* have inspected...). Owner
is a car buff, moving up to a C5 S6.

My son is as happy as a pig in $hit, buying his first car, and
getting one that he thinks is cool. And evidently an old Audi
carries more cachet than a new Jetta/whatever in his crowd.

He's paying for the car, I'm going to fix all the first round of
stuff, then he's on his own.

Oh, and I'm launching him down the slippery slope that we all know
too well, with a 3 spoke sport wheel and a set of Ronals for his
summer tires. He has also launched himself down the slope, asking
me about a xenon upgrade for the car. We'll do the tt projector
upgrade on his and then perhaps on my wife's car...

Fun stuff.
