[s-cars] alternator woes?

have you ever had any gear grinding noise coming from inside your  dash?  like watch gears grinding.  the fan for the climate  control I believe is wired directly to the alternator (at least on the  100 it is).  when these fans die out and dont get fixed they can  short out the alternator.
