Randy,
There is no fix for the gas charged struts. Just replace them. The
cold weather exposes the weak
struts and they commonly fail after 10 to 20 years. :-) Just be
happy its not an avant tailgate whacking
your back. :-)
If you don't have a good local supply and Mark's suggestion to get a
used A6 strut is a valid one,
then I think aftermarket is ok for this non-critical part. I suggest
<www.autohausaz.com> for a good
price, but I recommend calling them since I have heard some
complaints about their Canada delivery
policy. Their US customer service and delivery have been excellent.
Mark, That is a real astute guess for a Canuck :-) -- it's cold in
Saskatchewan in July, although I have
heard that the Northwest Territories have suspended truck deliveries
to the mines on the ice road
because of warm weather, so cold is a relative description.
