Huw, I read your reply and couldn't help to laugh
because every tire shop I've been to seems to be
exactly the way describe--from Sears to local shops.
The places I have the tires in my car done, do let you
walk around to see the work being done. That said,
still there's something that doesn't quite go the way
it should be done.
For instance, the last time I had an alignment done
on my VW QSW, the monkey lad at the shop left the
driver side's tie rod end way off its suppose 90*
angle to the rod assembly.
Not leaving tie rod end at a 90* angle causes friction
on the little boot, thus, causing it to rupture.
I told the monkey lad about it and his reply, with a
bad attitude was: "Well if I leave it at the angle you
ask it throws off the alignment"
I told him that he needed to turn the nuts in certain
combinations keeping one lock while turning the other.
Basically, there I was tell him how to do his F*&^%$
job.
Separately, what about the monkey lads that beat the
crap out of rims when R&R tires. It has not happened
to me personally, but I've seen it happen.
I always tell the monkey lad to be gentle with my
car's rims while I slip him the tip before he start
work.
Regards,
Louis
