To expand on Jamu's comment, there are two main causes of UrS tranny whine.
The first gear whine is caused by spinning the wheels in first gear and
galling the gear teeth. The surface of the teeth then gets progressively
worse and the whine gets louder. The wider first gear introduced in mid '95
helped resolve this issue. The RS2 trannys had the wider first gear AND
hardened gears.
The other source of whine is the pinion bearing failure. Gertag had a
problem with improper torque on the pinion nut that resulted in early pinion
bearing failure. This was resolved in mid '93 on the UrS4. The Porsche 944
used the same tranny and the pinion failure persisted into the late '90s on
those cars.

Yes, the 6speed B5 trans would be ideal, or even another S6 trans, but they
cost significantly more.  I've sort of run low on cash right now, and
neither of those options seems feasible for me right now.  Thanks for the
input though, I'll have to weight out my options here.
