[s-cars] Shocks and inserts - it's time to change 'em.

Hi Tom;
Rust control and paint is the primary reason for removing the springs and
changing the strut bearings :) I've broken a spring on every Audi I've owned
due to rust pitting and metal fatigue, so I'm planning a pre-emptive strike
here.
I pulled the rear units and disassembled them. They are nice and shiny in
their new POR-15 coating.
Tie rod ends and control arms are all new 20k km ago.
I'll give serious consideration to documentation. The job takes a long time
with the painting anyway, so documentation won't add much time to the
exercise :).
Thanks for your kind words on my humble efforts.
Fred

Wow, this could be the start of something great. One of those great
DIY epistles
from Fred could be in the making here. It would be a shame not to
document
such a project like you did in the URS4 website days, Fred. Did you
pull the
towers in the rear or change those in place with a shortcut as well?
Not to mention I am changing Bilstein/Eibach setup on the sedan and
Boge turbo
gas all around on the avant. :-)
For those listers not familiar with Fred's work, look at the DIY
information transferred
to s-cars.org. The lions share of that technical information was his
work.
Vincent's caution to not do half a job is important to consider here
as well, so do make
sure the condition of tie rod ends and control arms warrants leaving
them in place. If
you are doing all that at the same time, might as well drop the strut
towers and do
bearings, bushings, and new nuts and bolts hardware at the same
time. Y'all up north
probably need some rust control and paint as well.
