[s-cars] S6 left me stranded on the highway

Azeem,
You can probably rule out the CPS as it doesn't shut off the engine. It just
avoids restarting. Beside, it usually fails with warm engine only at the
beginning, still allowing restart when the engine is cold.
First, there is a question about what exactly the engine does:
- Doesn't crank
- Crank but no start
- Start but shut off immediately.
If it cranks but doesn't start, you can try ether or any "Easy Start" spray
on the air filter and crank it for 5-10sec. If it starts and keep running,
at least you'll know it's a component related with start only, such as CPS.
If it doesn't run even with ether, its probably a component related to
running and the list is much longer (fuel pump, engine speed sensor (not the
CPS, the flywheel one), ESS pin on the flywheel, burnt CPU, etc.)
HTH,
Vincent.

Objet : [s-cars] S6 left me stranded on the highway
I was on the onramp, getting up to speed to merge onto the freeway when the
car just died on me (shutoff). While I was coasting, I tried to restart it,
but it would promptly shut right back off right away.
I decided it was safer to just coast the car to the shoulder and have it
towed. When I got out to inspect, I noticed the driver's side bottom samco
hose had popped off.
The car's at the shop now here in Chicago, and I'm told there was a fault
code for an engine speed sensor.
I brought up the idea of the crank position sensor because I remember
reading several posts about this in the FAQ. Does the CPS just fail
suddenly, or are there usually signs before failure? The car was
trouble-free before this event.
Any ideas?
