Don't rule out the flywheel TDC sensor. I've seen an usS4 that was driven
home and parked in the driveway then wouldn't start the next morning thanks
to the "pin" on the flywheel comming off. I put pin in quotes since on these
cars it is no longer a pin, it's actually a rectangle of extra-ferrous
material that is *crimped* (not welded) to the flyweel. Not only did it ruin
the flywheel, but it took out the TDC sensor as it whipped arround in there.
Right arround the same time there was at least one other report of the same
issue with another lister... this was about 2 months ago now IIRC.
Have whoever is checking out the car put a scope on both flywheel sensors to
verify operation. If any maladies are found in the one that is mounted
towards the front of the car he will need to pull the starter and check for
a hunk of metal jutting out from the flywheel... it's ~4mm thick, extends
~10mm out from the flywheel, and is ~13mm long. I thought I took pictures of
the one I worked on, but I don't see them at the minute.
