Peter, not sure if this solution will work for you but I've used a do-it
yourself plug kit from Wal Mart. Plugged tire worked great for as long as I
owned the car. Cost about $6, I think.

But maybe your hole is too big?

My repair was made, IIRC, on a hole from a drywall screw. Removed the screw,
plugged tire per directions on package, filled with air, drove for about a
year on it.
