I had same issue but running Techron through a thankful remedied the
situation rather than being a potential cause. Frayed wires are certainly a
possible culprit. What I believe occurred in my case was the Techron
"de-gummed" the potentiometer on the fuel level sender and all became and
remains swell.

This is a known problem for S6 avants blamed on poor grounding of a
wire near the right
brake light. I had the issue for a while, but can't say for sure
that my removing the bose amp
and washer reservoir and messing around in there had any effect.
And, I don't think the sedan
is wired the same way.
