[s-cars] NAC - Looking for Boston Hotel and Restaurant recommends

Lee,
Well there you go, I'm right out to lunch again. One of my favourite lines
is "I don't know much but I do know this: I don't know much". I knew
someone with some better and more current knowledge would chime in. We
didn't spend any time in Quincy other than at the hotel. We found the
subway so convenient to go downtown and back. I guess I hit the drive to
Cape Cod at a bad time so that the drive took too much of the one day we
drove up there. We went whale watching and that was all we really had time
for. I want to say that we had a terrific time in Boston - it is such a
neat place - so much history, so much to see. Of course, 10 years ago they
were doing the big dig and that probably made driving worse but we found no
real need to drive. We took a taxi only once that I remember, and that was
an experience.
I'm sure I'm right to say Boston is certainly one of THE few cities that is
a must visit in North America.
Bob

Dave,

With all due respect to Bob, as a transplanted New Yorker who
learned to walk in Harvard Yard, and have lived in Boston for the
last 25 years, I have different some recommendations.

First of all, Cape Cod (the Cape) is wonderful in the fall and not
particularly crowded. Martha's Vineyard is a great experience,
figure on a day to three days there, and another couple of days on
Cape Cod. Traffic goes way down after Labor Day and you can get
from one end of the cape to the other in just over an hour. Plenty
to see, from the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory, to the sand dunes
and artist galleries in Provincetown. Lots in between, too.

With regard to staying in Boston, *don't* stay in Quincy. Bad
idea. 30 minutes of heavy traffic away from downtown Boston, and
pretty much nothing to do in Quincy.

There's a Holiday Inn on Beacon Street in Brookline that is
probably within walking distance of Fenway Park and lots of other
things. You'll want to go downtown, to Downtown Crossing and
Faneuil Hall, and over to Cambridge. Stay in Brookline or
Cambridge. You should be able to find a reasonably priced hotel in
the area.

If you like museums, there are a number around, from the Museum of
Fine Arts (MFA), to the Museum of Transportation, and many
others.

Pick up a Fodor's Guide to Boston, you'll get a full listing of
things to see.

Hope this helps.

Lee
