[s-cars] 1st, 2nd Gear difficulty -- advice?

Have you figured this out? My 93 S4 with the factory transmission is
doing a similar thing. 1st is very notchy and 2nd almost feels like I'm
shifting through a very very thick sludge to get it in. I have to pull
VERY hard and it slowly moves. No noise or grinding and no solid feeling
that I'm in 2nd, but when I let the clutch out, I'm in 2nd. It might not
be all the way in, though the car does go forward when I let the clutch
out. I just about need a sledge hammer to get it back out of 2nd.
Reverse, 3rd, 4th and 5th are fine.
