My name is Matt, and I loved my 87 16V Scirocco...

Though my former roommates wanted to kill me back in the day when I 
blew reverse (after picking up a pizza, strangely enough... 8-) ) and 
proceeded to tear down the trans in my old apartment.  The place reeked 
of bad gear oil for a month.

two weeks later, new reverse gear, and the taller 5th gear from a 
diesel donor..... that thing would purr around 2900 rpm at 70 on the 
highway.  No more buzz fest at 3400!  The best mod going, IMHO.

The scirocco replaced an 89 Jetta that was too "refined" for me back in 
the day.  After the reverse gear failure, i bought an 84 944 as a 
back-up vehicle; which eventually became the primary vehicle.  Then 
came the 92 s4, bought with just 86,000 in 98.

My (now) wife drove the Scirocco on the Saw Mill parkway back in the 
day and said it was her favorite car off all time.  I sold it to some 
guy from PA who drove 10 hours to buy it for 1600 bucks.

I gave the thing away.  Maybe someday I'll find another, at which point 
I'll bug Bob and Craig for sloppy seconds... 8-)
